We are a group of foreign exchange students, at Matej Bel University of Banska Bystrica. We would like to complain about the way we were treated in the bus by the ticket controller. It happened on the 10th of November 2009 (Tuesday) around 11 pm, bus number 34. The bus was very crowded and we couldn’t get tickets, by the time he got in - the next stop after ours. First he took our bus cards and he asked for our IDs. He shouted at us in the bus and spoke something in Slovak. He didn’t care that we are foreigners and we couldn’t understand him. We tried to explain and even showed him that we always buy tickets, but he didn’t listen to us. The only thing that we understood was the word “police” that he repeated several times. One of us was able to understand that they threatened to sue us and even extradite us back to our home countries. After everyone else got off the bus, they kept us inside without telling us what is going to happen. Four police cars came but the policemen stood outside smoking. After we spent 15 minutes of waiting in the bus and not knowing what is going on, they told us to go outside. There were 8 or 9 policemen waiting for the 10 of us. The situation was ridiculous because it looked like we committed a crime. We had to spend about 30 minutes outside in the cold, while they were writing our fine tickets.
We are aware of our guilt of not having tickets, however we didn’t even have a chance to do it. We would just appreciate some better treatment, though. It’s not the punishment that bothers us so much, but their behavior. We chose Slovakia as our destination to spend our exchange period, but we never expected to be “welcomed” in such a way. We are disappointed.
If it is possible, we’d like to receive any feedback.
