Tickets for Electric and Rack Railway.
Electric & Rack Railway Tariff
In the trains of Electric and Rack railways the Self-service ticket system is used. It means that the tickets must be bought in advance and marked directly by passengers in the trains. Three types of tickets can be used on the trains – single tickets, SMS tickets and prepaid tickets.
Single tickets are dedicated for one journey and they have designated departure and target stops and day of validity. They can be bought at the train station cash-desks, via mobile app or via phone by SMS message. You have to mark your ticket immediately after train boarding in the yellow marking machine located near the doors. If you have to change at Starý Smokovec you need not to mark your ticket second time. Return tickets must be marked not only during journey there but also during return journey. In the case of an SMS ticket, it is only possible to board the train with a received return message.
Prepaid tickets offer cheaper unlimited traveling during validity of the ticket on the Electric railway and Rack railway train. They can be bought at the train stations and they are valid for 1, 3, 7 days or 1 month.
For at least two journeys per day, it is more cost-effective to purchase a 24-hour network ticket for 6€ (or discounted for 4€), or a 24-hour SMS ticket for 6.50€ (discounted for 4.50€) (4€/2€ until 31 May 2025).
Penalty for traveling without valid ticket is 40 € + fare (when paid directly on the train, if paid later, it is raised up to 70 €).
The children from 6 to 15 years (incl.), seniors above 70 years, handicapped people and holders of Senior and Klasik cards have right for reduced fare. The reduced fare is also applied for dogs. There is no fee for the small baggage.
International Reduced Rate Card for Railway Staff (FIP 50%) is not valid on electric and rack railways.

- Multiple SMS tickets can be purchased with one phone (also for fellow passengers). If forwarded to another phone, the ticket becomes invalid.
- Passengers can board the train only with a received SMS ticket, the ticket should be delivered within 2 minutes after sending the SMS message.
